Photographing your Favorite Entertainer

Love going to concerts and getting your favorite entertainer on film! Well there are okay shots and then there are "album cover" shots. You know the one everyone tells you "this could be a CD cover" type photo. Well it's not hard, but it is tricky. A steady hand and keen eye are required when you have constant changing lighting going on. What do you look for to get that "CD cover" photo. Watch for expressions, if you know the songs you can anticipate that something will change and the artist's intesity will show through, that is f you time the shutter just right. Of course what kind of shutter speed and f/stop you use for shooting your favorite entertainer depends on the amount of lighting that is on your subject. You can get some really dramatic shots if you have cones of light coming down behind the entertainer, of course that is one of those changes in lighting that indicates change in the music. Use the light to your advantage, like this shot of Chris Botti that I took. By waiting for the moment he woud drop his trumpet I caught what appears to be light coming out of it. It really added to this shot and made it one of those "album cover" photos. Take your time enjoy the show, but be patient, wait and time your shot and you too will have a "CD cover" photo!
